Problem
When working with Advanced Reports Pie Charts, each element on the chart and the Legend show only percentage values by default after the initial creation.
Obviously, it would be more informative to see the actual values for each sector in the Pie Chart.
A similar request is also applied to the Legend.
Solution/Task
We need to adjust the visual output to show the colours assigned to each element on the chart body, along with the specific values (e.g., meters, in this example case).
The Legend should also show the names of the Pie Chart sections in matching colours.
Steps
Follow the steps below to customise the chart legend to display colours and values:
- Click on the chart area and then the cog icon to make the “Chart Tasks” menu visible on the right.
- Click the “Series…” link to call the “Series Collection Editor” pane on the right.
- Click on the “Legend Text Pattern” property on a Property Tab.
- This opens the “Pattern Editor” dialogue box for customising legend text labels. Click on the “Argument” placeholder.
- Click on the [>] button to copy the selected Placeholder (“Argument”) onto the Pattern list.
- Click the OK button to close the “Pattern Editor” dialogue box.
- On the Section “Elements”, click and expand the “Label” element.
- Click on the “Text Pattern” property.
- The Pattern Editor form will open. Select the “Value” Placeholder.
- Click on the [>] button to copy the selected Placeholder (“Value”) onto the Pattern list.
- Click the OK button to close the “Pattern Editor” dialogue box.
- Click the “Close” button to return us to the main Chart Designer screen, where the new text pattern formatting for data labels on the pie chart will be applied.
Everything now appears as we defined it in the Task section.
Additional Notes:
- You can further customise the appearance of your labels (colour, font, size) within the “Series Collection Editor” for optimal readability and visual style.
- The “Pattern Editor” offers various placeholders for flexible formatting. Experiment to find the ideal display for your chart.
